One Lovely Blog Award

And here we are again folks, with another award!  I’m VERY, VERY late in doing my duty for this as this goes back to October that I was given this, so let’s just get on with it…

The first and foremost thing to do is to always thank the person who gave it to you.

I have now received the One Lovely Blog Award and would like to thank Cooking with Corinna for the nomination.  You might want to check out her blog…she does some lovely recipes!

Now I need to share 7 things about myself….

1.  I love looking at spiders in their webs up close, especially if they’re in the process of spinning one!  I had the pleasure of watching one spinning back in the Fall.

2.  I prefer red wine over white wine.

3.  I enjoy entertaining and having people over, especially at the holidays.

4.  When I was young, we had various animals as pets: dogs, chickens, hamsters and rabbits, although not at the same time!

5.  I’ve never been on a cruise although I’m hoping one day…..

6.  When I bought my first car, I played the price of the car on the daily lottery….and won $100.

7.  I’m left handed.

A Super Sweet Blogger Award

Pretty soon I’m going to need a whole other blog just for the awards I’ve received!

Cookies or Cake?  Hmmm…can’t I have both?  And besides, it would depend on what type of cookies or cake it is.  For example if I had a choice between gingerbread cookies and chocolate cake, I’d take the cake, but if it were chocolate chip cookies or fruit cake, I’d take the cookies.

Chocolate or Vanilla? Wow, another tough one.  I adore just about anything chocolate, but if we’re talking ice cream, I’m a vanilla girl at heart as long as I could get it with some chocolate sprinkles on top.

What is your favourite sweet treat?  Can’t really say I have a definite favourite.  If I’m at a restaurant and I’m looking at the sweets menu, it’s often difficult to choose.  Having said that, I’d go for a fudgy chocolate brownie, topped with vanilla ice cream, drizzled with chocolate sauce and topped with marshmallow cream…and probably go into a hypoglycemia attack after eating it!

When do you crave sweet things the most?  Usually a picture or a commercial will trigger a craving, although that time of the month will trigger it too…or just when the mood strikes me.

If you had a sweet nickname what would it be?

Cherry Brandy Preserves

Oh my poor neglected readers….how I have abandoned you.  I have no excuse.

You may all condemn me to the pits of hell for lack of blogging.

What’s even worse is that I’ve been nominated for another award (which I will talk about in another post) and I feel I don’t even deserve it!  Why should I be given an award for something I do when I haven’t even been doing it!?

Or we can just pretend that I’ve been posting all along and it’s just a figment of your imagination. 🙂

So today’s post is for those of you who might want to dabble a bit in doing your own preserving.  As you know, I do a good bit of that myself, so thought I’d share today’s culinary adventure with you.

Yesterday I made Damson Vanilla Cheese which is just a concentrated puree and it comes out so thick that you can actually cut it.  It goes well with sharp cheese and meats such as lamb, duck or other game meats.  In case you don’t know, damsons are very small plums, about the size of olives.

Today I started making Cherry Brandy Preserves.  I say started as it’s a two-step process I like to do sometimes.  In fact, with the method I’m using, it should really be called a ‘Conserve’ and not a ‘Preserve.’

With preserves, the cleaned and prepared fruit is added to the pan and cooked a bit to break it down and then the sugar is added and continued to cook.  A conserve is made differently, although it can have the same ingredients.

With a conserve, the fruit is put into a bowl with the sugar and allowed to sit for several hours or overnight which lets the juices flow from the fruit.  This allows the fruit to stay whole or in the same shape as they were cut.  By tomorrow morning I’ll have a bowl of cherries sitting in a thick, sugary syrup of its own juices.

I like to use a ratio of 65% to 75% sugar to fruit to be on the safe side to ensure that it will keep well.  My jars are sealed properly but once they’re open and in the fridge, there’s still that chance of it going off if there isn’t enough sugar in the mix.  A lower amount of sugar can be risky and as I sell to the public, I can’t take that chance.

Δ  My only sibling is my brother Anthony who is four years older than me.

Δ  I used to collect shot glasses and I still have one that looks like a tree stump.

Δ  I’ve never been to California, but I’ve been to Vegas.

Δ  I dislike long sleeves that reach my hand.  On any of my tops or sweaters, I always roll up the sleeves 2 or 3 times.

Δ When I bought my second car back in the early 80’s (a ’79 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme), I played the lottery using the four digits, boxed, of the price of the car…I won $100!

Δ This coming New Year’s Eve, it will be six years since I’ve smoked a cigarette.

Δ I don’t eat oysters, raw or cooked, but I could down a dozen clams with no problem.

Some more things about me…

I still haven’t learned to drive a car over here yet even though I drove in the States for over 30 years. (this is what I used to drive…1991 Cadillac El Dorado)

My first concert I went to was to see the Doobie Brothers back in 1979

When I was 12, I entered an essay contest in the National Enquirer…and won a life-sized plywood cut-out of Tony DeFranco

During my childhood, we had a variety of different pets: dogs, hamsters, rabbits and chickens

I was a Betty Boop freak about 10 years ago (not so much anymore) and have a collection of various things (mostly from the Danbury Mint) including dolls, globed statuettes, a ceramic canister set, coffee mugs, tree ornaments, various trinkets and even a tattoo

My aunt pierced my ears when I was eight years old…using a needle and an ice cube

Well I think that covers everything.
