STORING FRUIT AND VEGETABLES

Not all foods benefit from being kept in the cold – as a general rule, ‘if it’s from across the Equator, don’t keep it in the fridge’.  This applies to avocados, bananas, mangoes and passion fruit.  Fruit that isn’t ripe should be kept out of the fridge and in sunlight to ripen, if possible.

Some fruits give off a natural gas that causes other produce to ripen quicker.  But if the other fruit and veg are already ripe, they should be kept separate as they will perish more quickly.  Fruits that give off the gas include apricots, avocados, bananas, nectarines, peaches, pears and plums.  Foods affected include broccoli, cauliflower, cucumber, kiwi, mangos, melons and tomatoes.

Terri’s Tasty Tip…

Get the basics right…Get yourself good knives; the best you can afford and learn to use them safely as it makes prepping ingredients much easier.  Keep them sharp – a dull knife can be more dangerous then a sharp one.
